The rapidly expanding field of experimental hip-hop has spawned a few true innovators, and a host of imitators, all over the globe. Rising above that bubbling soup is Melbourne based producer Aoi. Armed with a spare room full of dusty old records, analog synths, and some software, Aoi has created some of the most attention grabbing, psychedelic bangers in the country. They've even turned the heads of international acts, seeing him support the likes of RZA, Ras G, Phat Kat and Guilty Simpson, along with contributing beats to the work of GDP and his Slangcorp crew in New Jersey, USA. Aoi's also been highly sought after as a remixer. Last year alone saw him re-working tracks by Faux Pas, Kharkov, and Qua (Mush Records). Somehow he also finds time to perform live around Melbourne, with MPD and laptop, and it was one of these sets that caught the eye of Wax Museum Records.

Wax Museum dragged him away from his loop-digging and live show routine in order to give them enough material to fill a 12" record, and the Funnelweb EP was born. This is Aoi's first vinyl outing, having released a slew of mixtapes and beats via his website (http://www.aoibeats.com), dating back to 2007.

Funnelweb is, as it's name suggests, a mysterious and dangerous beast. Dangerous amounts of head-nodding will accompany from your very first listen, as primitive abstract drum patterns interact with lazer buzzsaw synths from the distant future. While others wear their influences on their sleeves, Aoi's influences come together into one amorphous, pulsating blob of sound - creating something of a mystery as to exactly what is going on. According to the man himself, it's the influence of "beatdigging culture, anime, italian zombie flicks, gold fronts, weird video games, golden era rap music, dusty drums, no quantising, prog, soul, krautrock and jazz fusion" that made it what it is. Nevermind that though, just call it "original banging beats," and realise you've just found the ultimate soundtrack for your late night city sojourns, and early smoke filled mornings.

TIGERMOTH - The 9th Tiger
Made in the year of the Tiger, The 9th Tiger is a reference to both himself and the world at large. Of the 8 original Tiger species only 3 remain and it appears as the world is perhaps on what may appear to be on its last legs. The 9th life of the cat is perhaps close to being here. But with this doomsday outlook the phoenix rises from the ashes and the 9th Tiger is born.

The 9th Tiger is distinctively Tigermoth, yet represents a departure and growth from his debut album, Underwater Beats, which was made entirely in Japan and was a prophecy towards what Tigermoth believed was coming. Though few people initially understood Underwater Beats meaning, opening tracks Swimming and In Deep perhaps illustrate it more in hindsight, than what they did at it's release. Whereas Underwater Beats was moody, downtempo and meditative, The 9th Tiger is more tribal, with more bass and bounce, while still sinister in its mood, it's permeated with more colour and a noticeably more positive mood. Which was both a conscious and natural evolution.

The album was mastered in LA by Dave Cooley, who is responsible for much of J Dilla and Madlib's recent albums (Jaylib, Madvillian, The Shining, Ruff Draft, Donuts, etc). Cooley was most impressed with the album, in particular the mixing and was somewhat taken aback when he learnt of Tigermoth's relative obscurity in his home country. Perhaps it is just the nature of the beast/beats.

Few hip hop producers buck the trend as Tigermoth does. Straying away from traditional sample sources, with a focus on producing instrumental beats, and a reluctance to subscribe to what he sees as unnecessary cliches, his beats have seen him heralded in underground circles from Japan to the US. Tigermoth has travelled the world in search of esoteric sounds to cut up with the precision of street Samurai and delivers with the The 9th Tiger. It is the album that may lead to him finally garnering the respect he deserves, and elevate him to the major stages both here and abroad.

Spooked out strings and dirty, torn background cuts folding in and out of an ominous bass line: it can only be a joint featuring caustic soothsayer Newsense. Pouring scorn on the security theatre and deliberate misdirection oozing into our mass media and consciousness, 'Cause & Effect' pulls back the curtain on the jaw-dropping amounts of spin we're force fed, with its furious lyrics wrapped with the elegance of a stand out beat.

A breath-snatching pan pipe refrain curls like smoke around 'The End of the World' featuring Termanology, Artisin and Gauge. From the ferocity of ‘Rep the Legacy’ featuring Lazy Grey, to the dark soundtrack-esque tones of‘Action’ featuring Lotek, and the sonorous sentiment within ‘I Want’ featuring Suffa; Window of Time is an engaging exhibition of melodic texture.

Title track ‘Window of Time’ epitomises Reason’s passion for history, and the importance of education in everyday life personifying the idea of ‘words from a teacher’.
‘Run Tingz’ featuring AJ (UK) and Iron Braydz (UK), is an impressive exchange between three emcees from different walks of life, the track demonstrates the unifying effect of shared passion. ‘We Come From an Era’ featuring Hau (of Koolism, and triple J’s hip hop show), is a generational sift through the idiosyncrasies which defined the times from which the two emcees grew up.

In typical Reason style, there are guests aplenty throughout the album. Sharing mic duties are world class emcees and vocalists including Lazy Grey, Bias B, Hau, Dialectrix, Hunter, Iron Braydz (UK), Lotek (UK), AJ (UK), Joyride, KYE, Mdusu, Rachel Berry & Rapaport.

The album is an excellent example of complimentary skill, each member bringing his own set of teeth to the brawl. Whisper’s supreme production skills claiming the bulk of the album, his lyrical poignancy is resonant throughout. Syntax with his venomous wit and fondness for sci-fi references, concocts imagery of other-worldly possibility while Breach tells it how it is, his voice rich with stoic assurance and intelligence.

In a time capsule unearthed in an overgrown train yard on the outskirts of Melbourne, archaeologists discover a dirt encrusted artifact, a codex of the art and science of hip hop based on a blueprint etched in concrete during a period of innovation. It bears the marks of the late 1980s and early 90s when the elemental standards were laid down by a small elite.

The artifact in question is For The Term of His Natural Life, the debut solo LP from Australia’s finest lyrical craftsman, Trem One.

To say debut is misleading, though. With a small but revered discography including two sought after vinyl EPs and his work with the Lyrical Commission on his own Unkut Recordings label, Trem is an elder statesman. Finally, For The Term… makes good on all the promises of his back catalogue. Following up on 2010’s rapturously received teaser single ‘Omega Man’, this project hits every target set for it.

Long-awaited doesn’t being to describe Trem’s first full-length, but the notorious perfectionist was never going to release anything less than a flawless gem: “I could’ve dropped varying versions of a solo album many times over, but it wouldn’t be this one. This is the one that I envisioned.”

Having fine-tuned his production chops on two Lyrical Commission releases and Brad Strut’s acclaimed Legend: Official, Trem now steps back from the boards somewhat, producing three cuts himself and inviting Beat Butcha (UK), Amazing Maze (Germany), Thorotracks (NYC), Must, Wik and long time compatriot Prowla to contribute to the soundscape. The result is a coherent 14-tracker that evokes the early nineties with a reactionary vigour. For The Term… exploits the prototypes of finely crafted braggadocio, visceral storytelling and the art of metaphor epitomised by MCs such as Rakim.

Beyond the razor sharp battle verses, the rush of the mission is depicted on the vivid graf narrative ‘Hard Yards’ and Trem talks like sex on the sticky and lewd ‘Strips’. Elsewhere, ‘Ever Since’ and ‘Reminisce’ trace the roots of his career back to the 80s while ‘Kings Court’ is a time-honoured ode to skills over suitably regal beat from Prowla.

Throughout the album, artfully collaged vocal snippets are deployed in the place of a hook by Prowla, DJ Bonez, DJ Dcide and Trem himself. Moreover, Trem breaks down the fading science of crate digging and chorus cuts alongside a masterful example of the latter from California’s DJ Revolution on ‘For The Record’.

Complementing the painstakingly composed verses and carefully considered cuts is an equal precision in selecting guests. Brisbane’s Kings Konekted is represented on two tracks, with the group’s Dontez providing the menacing chorus on second single ‘Animal Kingdom’. Both Dontez and Culprit commit verses to ‘Russian Roulette’, which also features Brad Strut. This grim and epic centrepiece to the album could be read as a passing of the torch from Lyrical Commission to one of the few new names worthy of carrying the flame.

Speaking of the rare collaboration outside his core crew, Trem notes: “I personally think they have the makings of something real special, but for whatever reason don’t seem to get the recognition of other new schoolers with half the talent. Konekted have crafted a mad original style that’s all they’re own but still sits within the blueprint’s guidelines.”

Another unexpected collaboration is a dream match up with Brisbane’s own old hand Lazy Grey on the vicious ‘Vet Clinic’, an interstate exercise in amateur euthanasia. In Trem’s words: “Collaborating with Lazy has been on the to-do list for a real long time and for various reasons it never eventuated. After tinkering with the idea for a while during the album’s making, it wasn’t til the right beat landed in my lap that I thought, shit, that’s the one! I am truly honoured to have the god on board.”

In a final surprise, lead single ‘Omega Man’ is reprised and flipped with help from Brooklyn’s Q-Unique (ex-The Arsonists, and a guest on Lyrical Commission’s Murderous Metaphors) and a fresh verse by Trem: “Being that there was a chunk of time between the single and the album I wanted to give it some new light. Instead of a traditional remix, I let that ill Prowla beat ride and rehashed my verse, adding a new dimension. Re-acquainting with Q on the track was a no-brainer.”

The sum of these parts is equal measures history lesson, skills seminar and classic storytelling. For the Term of His Natural Life is the culmination of twenty years of hard labour, an unapologetic exercise in hip hop artisanship that steps outside of time to take its rightful place in the Antipodean rap canon.

For the Term of His Natural Life will be available through independent records stores, directly from www.unkutrecordings.com and digitally via iTunes.

• Commencing with the album release, a Limited Edition Artist Series of merch will drop, each linking a leading Australian graffiti writer with a song on the album. Linz, who also painted the album cover, tackles ‘Kings Court’ for the debut t-shirt. Next up, Sofles will handle ‘Strips’, with later editions to be announced.

• A video for the second single ‘Animal Kingdom’ featuring Dontez of Kings Konekted, will drop to coincide with the album release, executed by Josh Davis, Heata and Discourse, who also delivered the stunning high definition clip for ‘Omega Man’

For this range, we wound the clock back to our very first drop back in 2001. That range included imagery captured on our many trips and adventures to New York City in the 90′s. This range, 10 years on, is of that same essence. The imagery was again captured some 10 years after our first trips to New York.

RED BULL WRECKERS YARD

Red Bull Wreckers Yard is taking street art culture from back alleys to the people. The best graff artists across seven cities from Australia and New Zealand have been hand-picked to display their artistic flair, whilst spraying against the clock. In each qualifier, eight graff artists will go head-to-head, spraying to a theme, announced just a minute out from the start of each heat. As the rounds progress, the canvas gets smaller, pushing the boundaries of creativity. The ultimate graff artist will be decided at the Red Bull Wreckers Yard Trans Tasman Final, held on 25 June at the Evelyn Hotel in Melbourne.

We just got a small batch of Blubber Colors in Rehab. Made in LA, this stuff comes with some high praise and some pretty interesting info about how geared towards being Eco friendly it is. Straight up.. the Violet Illadel is probably my favourite ink around. Grab Violet, chuck it in an NYC Mop and realise that it probably won't ever get better than that haha... We have just gotten restocked on Illadel Jumbo Mops, Bombing ink in 5 colours and the notorious Black Label bombing ink... it's all hardcore, its all hard to buff, and it all suits markers or mops.

This Ink is dope! The Ink is completely clear but after drying and reacting with sunlight it turns a very hard to buff black/brown.

And by very hard... I mean VERY fucking hard.

Completely invisible until the reaction, depending on the amount of light it will start showing within half an hour... or.... a whole nights worth of fun rising as the sun does. We have 200ml bottles of Stealth Ink, mini and large Stealth Ink markers and the Stealth Calligraffiti markers. We will also have the coloured Stealth Inks available in a week.
